PNP cites importance of functional VAWC desk in barangays

SAN JOSE, Antique -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) cited that Functional VAWC (Violence Against Women and Children) desks in barangays are essential support system to help women survivors of violence and abuse.

PSupt. Joem J. Malong of Philippine National Police Region 6 emphasized in an interview that a Barangay VAWC Desk should be functional so that immediate response could be given to women and children who were victims of violence.

“More often in far-flung barangays, victims find a hard time to report to PNP but with the functional VAWC desk, anytime and at any place in Antique there will be local authorities where victims can take refuge or seek immediate assistance”, she said.

She also cited the important role of barangay officials in making the said desk functional with competent members, proper facilities and enough budget allocation to support the victims.

Addressing the issues at the grassroots level does not only empower women but communities in general to end violence and abuses, Malong said.

The PNP encouraged the survivors to report cases of violence and abuses. She assured that the PNP Women and Children Desk and other stakeholders are willing to help them.

Malong was in Antique recently as a resource speaker during the Pool of Speakers Training for the Functionality of Barangay VAWC Desk.

She discussed the salient features of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act and the guidelines in setting up the VAWC Desk.

It was attended by the members of the Technical Working group of the Provincial Council for the Protection of Children and Provincial Inter-Agency Council for Anti-trafficking and VAWC.

The activity was spearheaded by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, which also in line with the observance of the 18-day campaign to end violence against women and children. (PSM/PIA-Antique)
