Antique Anti-tobacco advocates conduct info drive

SAN JOSE, Antique Nov. 30 (PIA) -- The Smoke-free Philippines Caravan spearheaded by the Vital Strategies and Department of Health rallied people in the Municipality of Pandan to support the increase in Sin Taxes on products like tobacco to deter the youth and other people from smoking.

Communication Manager Carlos P. Garcia of the Vital Strategies said that the Municipality of Pandan was chosen as the first leg of the Caravan because the town has recently received the Department of Health’s Red Orchid Award 2017. 

The award is presented to LGUs with 100 percent tobacco-free environment programs and activities.

Garcia said that the caravan is rallying supporters across 13 Philippine cities and underscoring the positive impact of higher tobacco taxes which will benefit public health and the country’s economy. 

According to the press report of the vital Strategies, more that 17 million adult Filipino smoke cigarettes per 2015 Global Adult Tobacco Survey. It is estimated that more than 71,850 Filipinos or eight people die every hour due to tobacco-related diseases every year.

An estimated 3,000 non-smoking adult Filipinos die every year of lung cancer as a result of inhaling second-hand smoke, the press report said. 

The activity in Pandan also featured caravan booths for various games like Asintahin where the player darts to pop all the balloons that symbolizes the smoke-related diseases; Uposin- the player in this part of the game must put a hole on the symbolic cigarette butts by using water gun; and Tumbang Yosi – the players with darts will pop all the balloons that symbolizes the smoke-related diseases and save the smoker.

After Pandan, the caravan will also visit Baguio City, Balanga, Bataan; Quezon City, San Pedro in the province of Laguna; Buruanga, Ibajay and Kalibo, Aklan; Roxas City, Capiz; Iloilo City; Oroquieta City; and General Santos City. The activity will culminate in Davao City. (VWV/PIA Antique)
